Tuesday 2nd April 2013

Ok, computer has just died, so I'm afraid any photos will have to be added later.

Weather:- cloudy with sunny spells and windy.

Woods:- usually birds around, but a male bullfinch displaying well.

Canal:- mallards, moorhen. Greater spotted woodpecker seen briefly, then one heard drumming. Female greenfinch seen with nesting material in beak.

Reservoir:- 45 black-headed gulls, lesser black backed gulls, coots and mallards. Two great-crested grebes also present.

Netherton hill:- carrion crows, magpies and a buzzard soaring over. The big surprise was a red kite flying east. Seems to be the year for surprises, third outing in a row and the unsuspected has been spotted. Just goes to show, doesn't it. There was a male reed bunting at the bottom of the hill, by the cattle bridge. Another first sighting for me.

If I've missed anything, I'll add it on later when computer hopefully feels better. Just wanted to put up a quick post.

  2. Thanks for you prompt information, about the herons, I wasnt sure how often they came, at least I know they do go there now, so thank you again, hope you get your laptop fix,I've had it happen to me quite a few times and its like having your right arm cut off and Ipads are just not the same and we miss those photos of yours, you'll have to forgive me asking questions but I am new to all this, so I'm an excited newby lol, but one more question, if you don't mind answering, in the summer months last year, it was around the time those moorhen chicks was on the canal, by the canal house, (the guy who lives there is called Jack) well anyway 4 times around that area I saw what I believed to be a kingfisher fly past me,now I do know kingfishers do live on Canals,I was wondering if you had seen any last summer and if you roughly knew where they was nesting, Im 99.9 percent sure it was a Kingfisher, because that flash of blue I saw was quite unmistakable, the first time i saw it was walking just past the two bridges at the bottom of Netherton Hill, and it flew up the canal, the second time i was taking pictures of the moorhen chicks by the canal house and if flew past up the canal third time same place but it flew up by that little turning up to the reservoir and the last time i saw it I was just come down off the step which lead you to either lodge farm or the canal and it quite literally flew in front of my face up the canal again, so I was wondering if they are common down there and if anyone knew where they roughly nested because I would love to get some shots of them, I promise I wont disturb them, any information, I would be so grateful thanks

    1. Flash of blue is normal the most common sign of a kingfisher. Lucky you seeing one during the spring. I've only seen ten in the winter on the rasa. I have heard reports of sightings during spring/summer on the canal, between the raza and brewers cutting, but don't know if they nest there. Just keep watching.

Computer is fixed and just waiting delivery, hopefully weekend, yeah. Can't wat to check last lot of photos.
